Standing Deer partially understood but as they reached the patio and he saw the pool, all other questions fled his mind. He walked over to the pool and submerged his hand in the water. It was cool and refreshing. Why did she kept her drinking water in such a strange and large enclosure? Didn't she live near a lake or stream? Where were the fish?

Standing Deer stood up and looked around the yard. It appeared as if someone had taken plants and placed them in an order. Nothing grew freely here. He didn’t recognize any of the plants. It was a pleasant piece of land except she didn’t let the plants grow where the hand of the Great Spirit placed them. He didn’t see any plants she could use for food or medicine.

This piece of land surrounded her lodge like the white man’s fort. It hid her land from the other strange lodges he saw beyond her fort. Why would she want to be closed off from her own people? Did the white man in her world fear each other so much they had to secure themselves behind wooden walls? Was her world so dangerous she had to hide behind a barricade? No wonder the white man doesn’t trust the Indian. How do they like this? They can’t trust their own people. No wonder the white man has not trust in people. They can’t trust each other.

Standing Deer jumped at the loud, unfamiliar screeching sound he heard from the sky. “Run!” His knife was in hand as he was dragging her to the door. Why wasn’t she reacting to this danger?

Karen was more focused on the dance of emotions she saw flitter across his face. She wasn’t paying attention to the jet overhead. She grabbed his arm and attempted to stop him from running into the house, understanding it was pure instinct for him to react the way he did.

“It's an airplane. It’s used for transportation.” Karen was dismayed. She had a lot of explaining to do in the next several hours. She took a deep breath, looking toward the sky wondering how she got into this mess.

She needed to explain some of this modern world to Standing Deer. He’d at least be partially knowledgeable about this world, even if he wouldn’t be here long. How much she should explain she wasn’t certain.

Deciding to start with something within his sight, “This is a pool. It helps a person keep cool, refreshed, and I swim in it.” Tapping her lip, “You don’t drink it.”

He shook his head. He understood what she’d said but couldn't understand the necessity of needing one next to your lodge.

“This is for you only?” Scanning her lodge surrounded by fort walls.

“Yes.”

“You use it only for bathing?”

“No, just for swimming. I have bathtubs for bathing.” Biting her lip, she realized she wasn’t explaining properly. “Maybe you should ask me as many questions as you want. If I can, I’ll answer you.”

Standing Deer was relieved. To the Lakota, it was rude to ask personal questions without the consent of the other person.
